Description and performance of track and primary-vertex reconstruction with the CMS tracker

چکیده
A description is provided of the software algorithms developed for the CMS tracker both for reconstructing charged-particle trajectories in proton-proton interactions and for using the resulting tracks to estimate the positions of the LHC luminous region and individual primary-interaction vertices. Despite the very hostile environment at the LHC, the performance obtained with these algorithms is found to be excellent. For tt events under typical 2011 pileup conditions, the average trackreconstruction efficiency for promptly-produced charged particles with transverse momenta of pT > 0.9 GeV is 94% for pseudorapidities of |η| < 0.9 and 85% for 0.9 < |η| < 2.5. The inefficiency is caused mainly by hadrons that undergo nuclear interactions in the tracker material. For isolated muons, the corresponding efficiencies are essentially 100%. For isolated muons of pT = 100 GeV emitted at |η| < 1.4, the resolutions are approximately 2.8% in pT, and respectively, 10 μm and 30 μm in the transverse and longitudinal impact parameters. The position resolution achieved for reconstructed primary vertices that correspond to interesting pp collisions is 10– 12 μm in each of the three spatial dimensions. The tracking and vertexing software is fast and flexible, and easily adaptable to other functions, such as fast tracking for the trigger, or dedicated tracking for electrons that takes into account bremsstrahlung. Track Reconstruction and Alignment with the Cms Silicon Tracker
This report presents recent results on track reconstruction and alignment with the silicon tracker of the CMS experiment at the LHC, obtained with a full detector simulation. After an overview of the layout of the tracker and its material budget, the baseline algorithm for track reconstruction is discussed. The performance of the track reconstruction and its dependence on misalignment is shown....
متن کاملTrack Reconstruction Performance in CMS
The expected performance of track reconstruction with LHC events using the CMS silicon tracker is presented. Track finding and fitting is accomplished with Kalman Filter techniques that achieve efficiencies above 99% on single muons with pT >1 GeV/c. Difficulties arise in the context of standard LHC events with a high density of charged particles, where the rate of fake combinatorial tracks is ...
متن کاملElectron Reconstruction in CMS
The reconstruction of the energy and momentum of isolated electrons in CMS combining tracking and electromagnetic calorimetry information is described. The emphasis is put on primary electrons with transverse momentum below GeV . The energy deposited in the electromagnetic calorimeter is measured in clusters of clusters (superclusters) which collect bremsstrahlung photons emitted along the elec...

CMS silicon Tracker alignment consists of three key components: Survey during tracker construction, measurements with the Laser Alignment System during operation and track based alignment. Methods and results are explained in detail, with a special focus on track based alignment due to its enormous complexity and numerical challenges. Presented at Vertex06 – 15th International Workshop On Verte...
متن کاملImpact of CMS Silicon Tracker Misalignment on Track and Vertex Reconstruction
The alignment uncertainties of the CMS Tracker detector, made of a huge amount of independent silicon sensors with an excellent position resolution, affect the performances of the track reconstruction, the track parameters measurement and the vertex reconstruction. In order to study the impact of the mis-alignment of the CMS tracking devices on the previous procedures, realistic estimates for t...
